Mrs. Becca Sykes-Kofonow
Position at SACA:   Language Arts Instructor
I am a Language Arts Instructor at SACA. I earned my Bachelor’s of Science degree in Family Studies and Human Development with a minor in Psychology from University of Arizona in 2004. I started my career in education at the high school level teaching English, Child Development, and Life Skills while finishing my K-12 certification. When I finished my certification, I taught at the elementary level for two years. I recently came back to teaching high school and joined the team here at SACA.
I grew up traveling all over Europe, as my dad was in the military (I come from a long history of armed forces veterans). For six years; we spent our time in Germany, which will always be one of my most favorite places in the world. I love to travel and enjoy learning about new cultures. My dad retired here in Tucson and I finished middle school and high school here. After high school, I went to Pima for a year then won a coveted spot in the Walt Disney World College Program and moved myself to Orlando, FL to work for the Mouse, Mickey Mouse! It was a wonderful learning experience and I loved almost every minute of it (Hurricane Floydd was a bit scary though!). I returned home in 2000 to finish up school at the University of Arizona. I am extremely proud of being the first person in my family to graduate from a university.
These days, I spend my free time with my husband Jason and our three furry kids; Bella, Tangelo, and Emma. We love to go camping, hiking, fishing, play games, watch movies, and we are both avid readers. I enjoy writing and reading poetry and I am currently learning to sew to honor my grandmother by finishing a quilt she had started just before she passed away. I’m also very active in animal rescue/ rehabilitation and work with a national rescue to help find abused and neglected animals forever-homes. We also educate the public about the wonderful beings who are the “pit bull” (there are at least 15 breeds easily mistaken for “pit bulls”) and all the other animals with undeserved bad reputations.
My favorite things about teaching and working with high school students is opening up minds, having great conversations, and helping them relate to what they are learning. I have a great passion for reading and I love finding literature for others that they will find enjoyable, thus igniting their love of reading.
